An iPhone shows Untrusted Enterprise Developer when an app arrived by a route Apple built for organisations, and you have not told the phone to trust the developer. The message is a warning, and it appears before the app opens. This page walks through the three causes Apple’s pages describe and what to do about each, starting from the mobile security hub for phones.

The app came from an enterprise program, not the App Store

Apple’s page says an organisation can use the Apple Developer Enterprise Program to create and distribute proprietary enterprise apps for internal use. Trust has to be established before such an app opens. Apple recommends distributing through Mobile Device Management, which trusts the apps automatically; the manual route is installing from a website the organisation operates.

Problem

You opened a casino app and the phone says the developer is not trusted, and a page tells you to go to Settings and tap Trust.

Fix

Tap Cancel and stop. A casino is not a school or a business distributing staff apps, so the enterprise path is not meant for it. Delete the app by pressing its icon and choosing the delete option, and do not follow the trust steps.

Untrusted enterprise developer: why the Trust button is the risk

Apple’s trust steps run through Settings, General, VPN & Device Management, then the developer name in the Enterprise App section, then Trust. On iOS 18 and later, you tap Allow & Restart. After you trust a developer, Apple says you can manually install other apps from the same developer and open them immediately.

That last sentence is the reason to stay out. Trust is given to a developer, not to one app, and it stays until all apps from that developer are removed with the Delete App button.

Problem

You already tapped Trust and the app opened.

Fix

Open Settings, then General, then VPN & Device Management and read the Enterprise App section. Delete every app from that developer; Apple says the trust ends when you use Delete App to remove all of the developer’s apps. Then change the passwords you typed into it, and read how saved passwords on the phone are handled to clear any stored login.

A configuration profile came with it

Apple’s iPhone guide says a configuration profile can arrive in an email or from a web page, and the phone asks permission before installing it. Profiles define settings for corporate or school networks and accounts. Apple’s safety guide adds that profiles, device management tools and custom apps can allow access to data or location information on the device.

Problem

Settings shows a profile you did not expect under VPN & Device Management.

Fix

Select the profile, tap Delete Profile and follow the on-screen steps, then restart the phone. Apple warns that deleting it also deletes the settings, apps and data tied to the profile. If the phone belongs to a school or business, ask the administrator first.

The app shows a verification notice instead

Apple notes the phone must be online to verify the developer’s certificate. With no connection, the device shows a notice that the app still needs verifying, and a Verify App button appears. The same page says the phone must re-check the developer’s certificate periodically, and a message may warn that verification will expire soon.

Problem

The app says it still needs verifying and offers a Verify App button.

Fix

Do not tap Verify App for an app that was never meant for you. If it is a staff app from your own employer, ask the administrator. Otherwise delete it, which also removes the question.

Still not working?

  1. Delete the app and every profile you do not recognise, then restart.
  2. Check Settings, then General, then VPN & Device Management again; an empty section means no profile is installed.
  3. Change any password you entered while the app was open, and turn on the lock options described on the biometrics page for phone logins.
  4. On an Android phone the matching risk sits behind a different switch; the antivirus on Android page explains what the built-in protection covers.
